DIY Party Straw Decorations: Cosmic Party Theme

by Ame

If you’re looking for some fun things to do with kids, how about throwing an out of this world cosmic themed party for them and their friends? It’s a great idea for kids who are mesmerised by space, fascinated by aliens, and love all things that are a little bit ‘out there’. We’ve got all the information you need to throw a party that’s truly astronomical; we’ll look at decorations, designs, and even look at how to make ice cream with an amazing galactic twist that is sure to be the highlight of the day!

Party straws

Let’s get started by looking at how to make classic kids party straws a little more celestial. It’s actually really quick and easy, and it’s simple enough for the kids to join in, too. Here’s what to do:

  • Draw some space designs onto a piece of white card. You and your kids can draw up anything you can think of, including rocket ships, alien faces, planets, moons, stars, and so on.
  • Now it’s time for the kids to really get creative. Using pens, pencils, crayons, paints, stickers, and other decorations, your kids can colour in and decorate their designs however they wish.
  • When dry, the designs should be carefully cut out, and stuck to the straws using tape. Parents may want to help out or supervise with this, and ensure young children use safety scissors.

Using your straws

Now that the cosmic straws have been made, it’s time to put them to use. These straws can be used for soft drinks, milkshakes, or even for ice cream if it’s starting to become a little melty on a hot day! If you’re thinking of serving ice cream at the space party, don’t just serve ordinary ice cream. It’s really simple to learn how to make ice cream with a cosmic twist, and it whips up really quickly, too!

Here’s how to make ice cream that tastes so good it could be from another planet:

  • Whip a large tub of thick cream until it holds medium peaks
  • Mix in a tin of sweetened, condensed milk, along with a teaspoon of vanilla flavouring
  • Divide the mixture into separate bowls for different colours — as many as you wish!
  • Add food colouring to each bowl. Pinks and purples are great galaxy colours
  • If you have edible glitter or edible star decorations, don’t be afraid to add these in!
  • Combine all colours into one freezer-safe container, and gently swirl to create patterns
  • Freeze until the mixture has an ice cream texture and consistency, and enjoy!

Now that you know how to make ice cream and cosmic party straws, the only thing left to do is decorate! How about blowing up some green balloons and drawing alien eyes on with a black pen? Or cutting out star shapes out of yellow card to hang around the room? The possibilities are infinite, just like space!
